Liability insurance for companies
If you have a business, you may cause harm to your customers while at work. Just think of a painting company that drops a pot of paint over the carpet. With liability insurance for companies (AVB) you are insured for damage caused during work.
Why do you take out liability insurance for companies?
Most Dutch people already have liability insurance for private situations. However, liability insurance for private individuals (AVP) does not cover damage that you cause as a company. Such damage can be expensive, so it is wise to have an AVB. Don’t have this? Then you run the risk of not being able to pay such a high damage claim yourself. Especially as a small self-employed person, this can be a problem that you would rather not have to deal with.
What is insured with liability insurance for companies (AVB)?
Liability insurance for companies covers the damage you cause as a company. You can think of the pot of paint being kicked over. But also a commercial building where corrugated sheets blow off, which then causes damage to cars parked nearby. Or a product you have delivered that causes damage. The coverage is comparable to liability insurance for private individuals, but for your company.
What is not insured with an AVB?
Professional liability is not insured with AVB. That’s confusing because it’s liability associated with your business. Professional liability concerns, for example, incorrect advice you have given or the provision of incorrect or incomplete information. Actually, damage caused by mistakes made in your work. You can take out professional liability insurance for this. There is also no cover for items that are “under supervision”. For example, a kitchen that you are installing and becomes damaged. You are in possession of the kitchen at that time and damage to it is not covered by the AVB. Even if you deliver poor work and are held to account for it, there is no coverage under the AVB. This falls under entrepreneurial risk.
